Discussion: Port Naming: Walter has created a presentation for the IBIS Summit on the Port Naming Enhancement for Touchstone Files. He noted that port naming was the top request in the 2019 Touchstone survey. The problem is the Touchstone port information is not sufficient and is in different formats that are not computer readable. Michael asked if the intention is to enhance Touchstone for interconnect. Walter added a bullet to say the enhancements are focused on Touchstone files used to describe interconnect. Bob Ross noted the port naming is optional. Arpad asked when the port naming would be used. Randy replied the intent is to make a standard format that is computer readable. Bob noted the scope of the port naming is still a discussion point. Walter noted, in the absence of a standard, EDA tools have proprietary formats. The IEEE 370-2020 standard defines how ports can associate a name, but we would want additional information. We would have the following requirements: one name for the port, an end point or location, and the connections for the through paths. Additionally, it is nice to know the differential ports. Arpad asked about C-phy, which has more than 2 pairs of signals together. He suggested to add Cord signaling ports. Walter stated the reference information is another topic. Bob asked what reference information means. Walter noted each port has two terminals as defined in IEEE 370-2020, where one terminal is the signal and the other is the reference. IBIS 7.1 assumes a single reference terminal for all ports of a Touchstone file. Walter asked if we should optionally add a name, a location, and a ground net name of the port reference terminal used to make the Touchstone measurement. Arpad suggested we should not limit ourselves based on what IBIS can currently do. He is in favor of having one reference at each end of the Touchstone model. Walter stated the goal is to add information to the Touchstone file to allow for automatically wrapping or connecting the model. Walter detailed the different ideas the Interconnect Task Group is working on. Michael asked about the context of the pin numbering and pin names. He was concerned the naming is specific for chips, and the RF and IEEE 370 groups may not see the value of these enhancements. Arpad commented this is a fairly application specific use case for the Touchstone file. Walter gave examples of the proposed format with both physical and logical port names. Arpad asked, if we don't have the physical name, would we want a naming convention such as using "NA". Walter replied either the logical name or physical name is sufficient. He agreed there are some details to make this work in the syntax. Bob noted these additions should be optional. Michael asked what the concern is. Bob replied that all of the information may not be available. Arpad commented the logical name and physical name are informational, and the parser cannot check these. Walter commented the parser can check the syntax, and it could check the logical nature of the return loss and insertion loss for the connections. Bob stated the motivation for the presentation is to get more people involved in the discussion. Michael noted IEEE 370 is aware of this work, and we can discuss at the summit. Walter will send out the Port Naming Enhancement for Touchstone Files slides [AR]. Arpad motioned to adjourn. Randy seconded. The meeting adjourned. Next Meeting: The next meeting will be March 23. ================================================================================ Bin List: 1. Touchstone 3 2. Pole-residue support for Touchstone 3.
