Brad Brim noted that there were no updates on Si2. During EMD discussions, Bob Ross asked a general question regarding packages, polling attendees for response on preferences among three choices: first choice is multi-lingual approach; second is EMD; third approach is Si2. Which does your company favor, if you can speak about it? Is ICM still an option? Some options may compete with each other. Walter Katz suggested that Si2 may not be an option, as not everyone knows about it. EMD is an evolution of EBD, for modules; it’s not specifically for packages as currently defined. There’s a need to link EMD to IBIS separately. Arpad Muranyi asked whether EMD would be used for package modeling too. Walter responded that this could be done after we complete EMD work; the next step is to propose a package BIRD to complete the linkage. This is eventually to be linked to pins and separately [Model]. Radek Biernacki noted that the team should specify the connections to both an IBIS file/more than one IBIS file, and other EMDs; the document should specify that IBIS does not connect to EMD. When will EMD be ready to use in the IBIS structure, and how? Arpad added that EMD and EBD are similar in that EBD instantiates IBIS files. Bob asked whether there will there be a specification collision between EMD and Si2. On multi-lingual models, they are not representing a real device but with a bunch of what-ifs, which could be an EMD. Walter stated that EMD is assuming that interconnect is committed to modeling through only two languages: Touchstone and IBIS-ISS. Steve Pytel suggested that the limited scope is a solution that isn’t of interest to the majority of the industry. Walter replied that IBIS-ISS is a subset and covers what the industry already does/needs for interconnect. Steve replied that several applications are not covered, including proprietary ones like MathWorks Matlab, plus transforms within HSPICE syntax not already within IBIS-ISS (Verilog is also needed, but not for interconnect). Walter replied that both are outside public domain (proprietary) and therefore may not be appropriate for standardization. Michael asked whether packages are covered by EMD or ISS. Steve suggested that IBIS-ISS is incomplete for some aspects. Bob suggested that we have Laplace transforms in IBIS-ISS, as a subset of SPICE. Michael noted that we can pull in new formats into IBIS-ISS and/or EMD. Bob suggests that we might want to limit the languages supported. Additionally, the team would want to ensure committee control of EMD, plus Si2 may overturn all of our decisions. Steve inquired as to the nature of the commitment that the team is making to EMD. Walter and Arpad suggested that changes could be made as part of development. Walter & Randy moved and seconded, respectively, to vote to make EMD the focus of task group work. Motion carried, with the following votes: Agilent Technologies - yes ANSYS - abstains Cadence Design Systems - yes Intel - yes Mentor Graphics - yes Micron Technology - yes Signal Integrity Software - yes Teraspeed Consulting Group - yes Bob noted that the team may have to break into editorial work on IBIS, possibly using the same time slot and participants. Walter requested that the participants review the EMD draft for next time, and generate examples. Randy may generate examples for DIMMs using EBD. Walter will create a conversion script. One point of discussion for the future: one can point to IBIS and EBD files from EBD; in EMD, you can point to EMD and IBIS, but not EBD also. Michael asked whether EBD models were convertible to EMD. Walter replied that this is possible and automatable with few manual changes. Michael also asked about development of a parser. Bob noted that the specific syntax can change; he added that the word “alternative” be used in place of “replacement” on page 2. The team will review EMD comments in the next meeting. ====================================================================== In case of Lync issues only, we will switch to WebEx as noted below.
