================================================================================ IBIS INTERCONNECT TASK GROUP http://www.ibis.org/interconnect_wip/ ; Mailing list: ibis-interconnect@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Archives at //www.freelists.org/archive/ibis-interconn/ ; ================================================================================ Attendees from April 1, 2020 Meeting (* means attended at least using audio) ANSYS Curtis Clark* Cadence Design Systems Bradley Brim Intel Corp. Michael Mirmak*, Ifiok Umoh Keysight Technologies Radek Biernacki Mentor, A Siemens Business Arpad Muranyi* Micron Technology Justin Butterfield*, Randy Wolff* SiSoft Walter Katz*, Mike LaBonte Teraspeed Labs Bob Ross* Michael Mirmak convened the meeting. No patents were declared. Justin Butterfield took minutes. Review of Minutes: - Michael called for review of the minutes from the March 25, 2020 meeting. Randy Wolff moved to approve the minutes. Curtis Clark seconded. The minutes were approved without objection. Review of ARs: - Walter Katz to propose text for adding the NA label to the [EMD Parts] keyword. - Walter reported he has sent out an email on this. - Bob Ross to send out EMD draft 5. - Bob reported this was done. Opens: - None. EMD Draft Review: Michael shared the email with the proposed text from Walter with suggested changes from Bob on the [EMD Parts] keyword syntax. Michael asked about the meaning of the NA NA entry. Bob noted the second column is the part file, where NA does not mean the same IBIS file. Walter noted NA means not applicable, so this would be NA for both fields. Bob suggested to use a stub model with a no connect model. There could be different types of file references, and NA and NC cannot be used as components names. Walter noted every part in the EMD Designator list should have one and only one entry in the list of Parts. Bob agreed this works. Walter commented, for parts that are not used such as analog parts, it is recommended for the model maker to add comments for the user or EDA tool to connect a model. If it is a resistor, it will have an IBIS file. A power converter could be added from the part number and a comment. The intent is some help to set up the part. Randy asked if the comment can be parsed by the EDA tool or if the user will have to make some selection. Walter replied there could be discrete part numbers with Spice subcircuits. The user will have to manually put in the model for the EDA tool to use, and part numbers by themselves are sometimes not very useful. Michael asked if the EMD Part Map should be called EMD Parts. Walter replied yes, and noted we need to resolve the name of this keyword. Bob asked how to handle two different muxes. Walter replied these would have different part numbers. Bob noted it could be in the comments, but the comments are not actionable and would be ignored by many users. Walter commented the users would need to find the databook for that part from the comment, while the part number would be the corporate part number. The NA means the part is not described by an IBIS or EMD, and the comment allows the user to try to find the databook. Bob suggested that we put in a dummy file, so that the pinout is documented, which will allow you to connect a model later with the same pinout. If you want to have a power converter, you can create a model with the different rails. Michael asked if Bob's changes meet the needs of model makers and users. Randy noted this would mean he would have to create a dummy IBIS model for these types of components. Bob noted there could be other functions not supported with IBIS in a digital simulator. Walter stated the pin list can be generated from the EMD Designator connections automatically by the EDA tool. The user of the EMD will have to decide how to implement muxes and other non-supported components. Spice subcircuits and discrete models can be used in the EDA tool. This same process is used for boards as well. Walter asked Arpad Muranyi how this is handled in his tool in the case there is no IBIS or EMD file. Arpad would assign a buffer model to each pin. Walter commented the model is assigned by the databook information. Michael noted we are describing something outside of the IBIS context. Randy commented there can be limits to what we can simulate, and there are limits to what IBIS can support. Michael asked if the objection is to the concept or the usage of NA. Bob replied you cannot ship an EMD file with an unknown component and expect anyone to simulate. He suggested rather than have a comment you would have a stub name, so the user knows to fill in the name. Bob asked if the first column is the Designator or the Part. Walter replied the first column is the part number which maps the to Designator. The comment gives a hint to what the actual manufacturer part number is. Some CAD systems have better naming of the parts with a description field. This could be another option to have a description field. Michael asked if this would be similar to Model Selector. Walter replied, yes. Bob commented a component cannot be NA, but the real name can be used in the description. Randy noted for RDIMMs Micron cannot distribute the models for the Register. In this case, he would have to put a comment for the Register part. It would be a place holder, and the user would have to locate the model. Michael asked if model makers need to put in a unique entry. Walter stated the first NA says I do not have an IBIS file. Instead of the second NA, a description could be given and after that would be any comments. The description could be a reserved list to make the determination if the part can be ignored. Randy asked if the second NA would signal the comment. Bob suggested the last field could be notes. Walter stated the notes can as long as the model maker wants. Bob the disagreement is to have the third column with a comment equivalent to leaving it blank or put in a single name. The part could have a dummy model with the connections you care about and some you don't. IBIS simulators do not simulate these components, and they may have non-simulatable components. Next Meeting: The next meeting will be April 8. Walter moved to adjourn. Curtis seconded. The meeting adjourned without objection. ================================================================================ Bin List: EMD Comments to be Resolved: (See BIRD202.1 tracking spreadsheet) IBIS-ISS Parser: - IBIS-ISS parser scope document
