No patents were announced.  

During opens, Greg Edlund raised the issue of IBM's binary format proposal.
He described the format as in active use by customers with the IBM HSSCDR
tool.  Brad suggested that a binary format, regardless of how represented
(little or big endian), would result in a compression factor of much more
than 2.  Lijun noted that no detailed document on the binary format was currently available.
