CALL FOR PATENTS Stephen Peters called for any patents or pending patents related to the IBIS Version 4.0 Standard. No companies declared a patent. MEMBERSHIP UPDATE AND TREASURER'S REPORT Stephen Peters reported that as of Thursday February 13, 2003 the EIA has received eight IBIS dues payments. After the January 2003 summit, two more invoices were sent out, bringing the total companies invoiced to 35. REVIEW OF MINUTES AND AR'S The minutes of January 10, 2003 were approved without comment. The minutes for the January 27, 2003 IBIS Summit Meeting were reissued after Arpad Muranyi provided some technical corrections in the DATA DEPENDENT BUFFER CHARACTERISTICS section as detailed below: 1) Quote: "A re-extraction and re-scaling of the common mode currents got rid of the undershoot, ..." should say: "A re-extraction of the VT curves from the combined SPICE model got rid of the undershoot, ..." 2) Quote: "Due to Miller capacitance, gate waveforms were coupling to the outputs, and the amount of coupling was changing depending on if the buffer was driving normal or de-emphasized data. Arpad was able to match the final output waveforms closely with tedious fine tuning, but he was not able to solve the DC level mismatch problem." This should say: "Due to Miller capacitance, the output waveforms were coupled to the gate of the current source transistor, modulating the effective drive strength of the buffer as a function of the buffer driving normal or de-emphasized data. Arpad was able to improve the model's final output waveforms with tedious fine tuning, but he was not able to match all aspects of the edge rates and the DC level mismatch problem." 3) The idea captured in "Arpad also pointed out that another way of modeling on-die power and ground capacitance is to use the [series cap] keyword between two pins." was actually someone else's. I believe Bob Ross mentioned it first, so the credit should go to him. (I only confirmed it). 4) There is a small spelling error in "The bottom line is that this effect is real, it cannot be models in traditional IBIS,..." ^^^^^^ This should read: "modeled" The revised minutes were approved without comment. ARs will be discussed during the meeting. MISCELLANY/ANNOUNCEMENTS Lynne Green presented a live seminar on January 29, 2003 on IBIS Model Validation Methodology and demonstrated a typical flow. The presentation is available for download from the following URL: http://www.cadencepcb.com/webinar/Modeling2/frmModeling.asp PRESS AND WEB PAGE UPDATES Stephen Peters reported that Syed Huq has updated the IBIS roster page with a new entry for Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. Bob Ross reported that the January 23, 2003 issue of EDN had IBIS mentioned in "Automation Frees High-Speed Design", by David March, pp. 61-72 and (split in two lines to avoid truncation): http://www.e-insite.net/ednmag/index.asp layout=article&stt=000&articleid=CA269865&pubdate=1%2F23%2F2003 Also, Bob mentioned that several papers at DesignCon 2003 mentioned or discussed IBIS including "New IBIS Modeling Approaches for Internally Terminated LVDS Buffers" by Mohammed Korany, Hazem Hegazy and Sherif Hammad, and "Pad Capacitance Extraction Methodology for IBIS Modeling" by Hazem Hegazy. NEW MODELS AVAILABLE, LIBRARY UPDATE No new models reported. OPENS FOR NEW ISSUES Stephen Peters requested to add BUG79 to the agenda. INTERNATIONAL/EXTERNAL PROGRESS - IEC 62014-3 (ICEM) Integrated Circuit Electromagnetic Model Proposal (formerly, IEC 93/67/NP IBIS and EMC Simulation) - No report. - JEDEC Activity Report Lynne Green reported that she would present two short courses on IBIS modeling at the JEDEX conference on March 24th. The URL for signup is: http://www.jedex.org/ Lynne is presenting two seminars. Seminar A is entitled "An Introduction to IBIS Models and Model Validation." Seminar B is called "IBIS Models for High-Speed Interfaces." The cost is $349 for members of JEDEC and $399 for non-members. DESIGNCON2003 IBIS SUMMIT MEETING FEEDBACK Stephen Peters asked for any comments regarding the January 27, 2003 IBIS summit meeting held at DesignCon2003. Bob Ross remarked that there was a good variety of papers, and though attendance was down there was still a full day of presentations and activities. DATE2003 EUROPEAN IBIS SUMMIT MEETING PLANNING Bob Ross reported on the European IBIS Summit. This summit is held in conjunction with the DATE 2003 conference in Munich Germany on Friday, March 7, 2003. Because of travel restrictions, no one from the US has obtained commitment to travel to Europe. Ralf Bruening and the Zuken team (who were co-sponsors along with Siemens AG and Mentor) have volunteered to chair the meeting and take care of much of the logistics. This year the meeting will be held in a room at the International Congress Center (ICM) where DATE 2003 is being held. Bob noted that participants would have to register for the DATE 2003 conference. The first announcement went out on January 15, 2003 and the second on February 5, 2003. Bob does not have a specific agenda report at this time, but Eckhard Lenski stated that he knows of about seven possible presentations. Seven presentation will fill the 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM meeting time. Bob expects about 30 people. Lunch arrangements are still being worked out. In follow-up to a question at the last teleconference, Stephen Peters has read the EIA bylaws and determined that this meeting can be considered an official IBIS summit meeting. DAC2003 AND DESIGNCON2003 EAST MEETING PROPOSALS Bob Ross mentioned that Ed Sayre is chairing a new DesignCon 2003 East conference in Boston from June 23-25, 2003. Originally the meeting was going to be conducted at a hotel in Boston, but it appears that the location will be changed to a "beltway" site outside of Boston and closer to the industrial participants. Holding a DesignCon meeting on the East coast is partially motivated by the fact that, due to travel restrictions, the West coast DesignCon meeting is not drawing many East coast participants. Much of the East coast meeting will consist of the best presentations given at the January 2003 meeting. Ed has invited the IBIS committee to hold a meeting there as we have done for many years at the recent DesignCon2003 in Santa Clara. Bob stated that Barry Katz and the Signal Integrity Software team would be willing to chair the meeting and provide some of the local support. It is also very likely that IBIS could be an Associate Sponsor of DesignCon2003 East, thus obtaining a meeting room and other benefits. Normally we hold our annual officer transition meeting along with the Design Automation Conference. This year we have tentatively scheduled this meeting on Thursday, June 7, 2003 in Anaheim, California. Stephen Peters asked if we should choose one location over the other, or if we should hold two IBIS summits. Bob provided some considerations: - Since most of the IBIS officers are based on the West coast, it is not likely that many will get authorization to travel to the East coast. However, the West Coast meeting may cost more money because we will have to pay for the meeting room. - It is to the advantage of IBIS to be geographically diverse and leverage off of East Coast activity. We already hold an IBIS East Summit associated with PCB East Conference in the September, October time frame. - Finally, Bob noted that it might be possible to hold two meetings and set up a phone line for webcasting presentations to the DesignCon2003 East meeting. In fact some presentations at the DAC2003 IBIS Summit could be repeated. If this was done, a full DesignCon2003 East Meeting would not provide any significant logistical inconvenience and would still serve the East Coast IBIS community. In fact, the West Coast folks could also teleconference in, and the IBIS Chair could conduct the meeting. Tim Coyle remarked that it would be good to do the East coast meeting for those that couldn't attend DAC. Lynne Green asked about the balance of participation between east coast and west coast. Stephen replied that their are active IBIS participants on both coasts. Stephen also remarked that he sees little downside to committing to the DesignCon East meeting. After further discussion the group reached a consensus that we should make plans to hold a summit meeting at DesignCon2003. No decision was reached on whether or not to also have a summit at DAC. Lynne remarked that we need to reach a decision soon so folks can start making their travel requests. IBIS VERSION 4.0 PARSER FUNDING AND STATUS Stephen Peters reported that the EIA has received IBIS 4.0 parser payments from two companies, however, six more companies have indicated that they are processing the paperwork. In addition, Stephen reported that Atul Agarwal has completed implementing the [Receiver Threshold]/[External Reference] keywords and should have the [Alternate Package Models], C_comp and the expanded V-T table limits done by mid-February. IBIS QUALITY COMMITTEE Lynne Green reported that the IBIS Quality Committee met on Jan 21, 2003 and again on Feb 11, 2003. They will be meeting again on Feb 25, 2003. They are still reviewing documents. IBIS MODEL REVIEW COMMITTEE Lynne Green reported no new models to review. NEW ADMINISTRATIVE ISSUES None. IBIS FUTURES AND CONNECTOR WORKING GROUP REPORT Stephen Peters reported that the IBIS futures and connector working group met February 6, 2003 and again on February 13, 2003 to resolve the issues raised by Michael Mirmak and Kelly Green and captured at the January 2003 Summit Meeting. Stephen stated that the futures committee has made very good progress, resolving all but three of the editorial and clarification issues. The futures working group will meet again February 19, 2003 to resolve these last three issues. Stephen expects the working group to issue a revised draft 1.0 ICM specification for consideration by the full IBIS Open Forum sometime in early March. BIRD80.1 - Add External Reference Column to Pin Mapping Keyword There was no further discussion, so Stephen Peters called for a vote. A motion to accept BIRD80.1 passed unanimously. BIRD81.1 - Clarify Usage Rule for [Pin] I/O Model Assignment Bob Ross reported that BIRD81.1 was uploaded, adding the editorial changes to BIRD81 that were identified in the January 10, 2003 teleconference. Arpad Muranyi noted a typo in the 'Statement of Issues,' but there was no discussion on the BIRD itself. Stephen Peters called for a vote, and a motion to accept BIRD81.1 passed unanimously. BIRD74.2 - EMI Parameters BIRD79 - Non-linear buffer impedance (extension to C_comp) Discussion on these BIRDS was deferred. IBISCHK3 & BUG TRACKING STATUS - BUG71 - Monotonic Checking for Combined I-V Tables Bob Ross has been discussing the clarification of I-V table combinations with Bob Haller. Further discussion was deferred until the next meeting. - BUG74 - Missing Timing Test Load Warning Messages Greg Edlund has updated this bug with clarification of assumed default values for Cref, Vref, etc. Further action is postponed until the rest of the Open Forum has had a chance to review the contents of the bug report. - BUG78 - Clamp Current Double Counting Test While this bug has a test case, it is still incomplete as to the bug specifics and how to detect the reported error. Bob Ross noted that this bug is data specific and may be beyond the scope of what the parser can detect. Bob proposed that unless the originator or quality committee can suggest a test for Clamp current double counting by the next teleconference, we should close this bug with a status of "will not fix". - BUG79 - Parser Crashes on [Submodel Spec] Matthew Flora submitted this bug for consideration. In brief, the issue is that if the parser encounters an unrecognized subparameter under the [Submodel Spec] keyword, it crashes. Matthew has identified the problem and has submitted a solution. This bug is classified as Severe, Medium, and Will Fix. NEXT MEETING: The next teleconference meeting is scheduled for March 7, 2003 from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM Pacific time. The next summit meeting is the European IBIS Summit Meeting on March 7, 2003. No phone bridge or webcast is planned. ============================================================================ NOTES IBIS CHAIR: Stephen Peters (503) 264-4108, Fax: (503) 264-1831 stephen.peters@intel.com Senior Hardware Engineer, Intel Corporation M/S JF4-215 2111 NE 25th Ave. Hillsboro, OR 97124-5961 VICE CHAIR: Lynne Green (425) 788-0412, Fax: (425) 788-4289 lgreen@cadence.com Senior Modeling Engineer, Cadence Design Systems 20 120th Ave NE, Suite 103, Bellevue, WA 98005-3016 SECRETARY: Randy Wolff (208) 363-1764, Fax: (208) 368-3475 rrwolff@micron.com Simulation Engineer, Micron Technology, Inc. 8000 S.
