No patents were declared. MEMBERSHIP UPDATE AND TREASURER'S REPORT Michael Mirmak reported that six Open Forum members have been confirmed to have renewed their memberships for 2004. At least one additional new member is likely to join within the next month, with the specific name to be announced at a later date. No 2003 financial report has been received from the GEIA, but one is expected shortly. Bob Ross suggested that the Board should immediately contact other 2003 members who were invoiced for 2004 membership to confirm their payment or remind them of their 2004 membership dues. Replacement invoices may be required for this. In addition, the GEIA may need to be reminded of the need for a 2003 year-end report. REVIEW OF MINUTES AND ARS Bob Ross noted that the Open Forum minutes from January 30 incorrectly listed Lynne Green's address. Also, the most recent summit minutes also contained an address error. Michael Mirmak stated that corrections would be made as soon as possible. MISCELLANY/ANNOUNCEMENTS No additional announcements were made. PRESS AND WEB PAGE UPDATES Michael Mirmak observed that a press announcement from Samtec regarding support of ICM and their joining of the IBIS Open Forum has been published in several on-line magazines worldwide. A version of the release can be viewed at: http://www.electroline.com.au/elc/latest_news/article.asp?id=5404 NEW MODELS AVAILABLE, LIBRARY UPDATE Bob Ross noted that a draft version of an updated IBIS model page from Roy Leventhal was in review and would be posted shortly. OPENS FOR NEW ISSUES No new issues. MAILING LIST ADMINISTRATION John Angulo stated that the IBIS reflector lists had encountered a spate of "spam" messages in recent weeks, but that none had been forwarded to the main lists. INTERNATIONAL/EXTERNAL PROGRESS - JEDEC Activity Report Lynne Green reminded the Open Forum that she and Ed Sayre of NESA will hold a workshop on IBIS through JEDEC from 10 AM to 5 PM on April 16. - FSA Modeling Committee Lynne Green noted that she will deliver a summary presentation on IBIS model quality at the Fabless Semiconductor Association on April 15. The Fabless Semicoductor Association can be found at: http://www.fsa.org - Other Activities Lynne Green noted that the Electrical Performance of Electronic Packaging (EPEP) group would be holding a meeting in Portland, Oregon in October 2004. Participation in the EPEP conference requires writing of an academic, technical four page paper with a presentation on the related research. At last year's SPI conference on signal propagation in Italy, Bob Ross delivered a one hour keynote address. Bob observed that there was some crossover between European IBIS summit participants and last year's EPEP conference. In addition, Anbrish Varma presented on SPICE and IBIS issues under S2IBIS3, including simultaneous switching noise in IBIS. DESIGNCON WEST 2004 SUMMIT REVIEW Michael Mirmak summarized the February IBIS summit at DesignCon West 2004. Attendance was large, with 40 participants from 25 organizations. Almost the entire scheduled time was filled with presentations and detailed discussions. Michael thanked the participants and presenters and expressed his hope that the presentations and discussions were useful and informative. EUROPEAN DATE SUMMIT Bob Ross noted that the summit was just concluding as the Open Forum teleconference began and, as a result, no summary was yet available. DESIGNCON EAST 2004 SUMMIT PLANNING Michael Mirmak raised the issue of attendance at DesignCon East in April. The IEC has expressed an interest in IBIS participation under terms similar to those used at the West coast event. No objections were raised to IBIS participation and Bob Haller expressed both his approval and his willingness for SiSoft to take an active role in managing the event on-site. As with previous years' summits, the DesignCon East event would involve a teleconference, but would be held at the DesignCon host hotel, pending room arrangements through the IEC. Bob Ross inquired as to whether a booth would be desirable. While Guy de Burgh has kindly transported and stored the IBIS booth for West coast events, the East coast summits did not usually feature a booth. Bob Haller did not think that foregoing the booth was a wise choice. If the IEC could provide an unused display booth with a table, chairs and a wastebasket, Bob Haller would be willing to coordinate with his company to provide labor for setting up the booth and staff to maintain it and talk to visitors. Lunch and refreshment options remain open. Bob Ross noted that no keynote address would be given on the Monday of the summit, so no lunch would be available to the participants as part of the conference. The Open Forum will investigate separate arrangements. Michael, Bob Ross and Bob Haller will discuss the requirements for the summit further off-line. Michael will also continue to work with the IEC on the logistical arrangements. OTHER EVENTS Lynne Green mentioned that the upcoming events calendar on the IBIS web sites should be updated to reflect the 2005 DATE conference in Munich from March 7-11. The IBIS summit at DATE would most likely occur on Friday, March 11. Additionally, Bob Ross asked John Angulo if he could again reserve a room through his company's resources for the IBIS Summit at the June 2004 DAC meeting. IBIS VERSION 4.1 PARSER Michael Mirmak announced that, with the approval of IBIS 4.1, a parser should be developed as soon as possible. Bob Ross suggested that the scope of work be formally written for public solicitation of bids. Bob also suggested contacting the current developer. A small committee should be formed to oversee the process. A formal bidding process might extend the development time by about one month. Michael Mirmak noted that the current budget with the GEIA assumes charges for parser development. However, traditionally, minor revisions of the parser were distributed to purchasers of major releases. Bob suggested that additional 4.0 parser license sales would preserve current practices and would still allow development of a 4.1 parser, limited to coverage of the 10 BIRDs approved since 4.0. Michael accepted the AR to draft the scope of work for soliciting bids for Version 4.1 parser development and for contacting the current developer. IBIS QUALITY COMMITTEE Bob Haller reported that a meeting was held on February 10, with minutes distributed to the committee mailing list. The quality document continues to be revised. The next meeting will take place on February 24. In addition, a draft version of the quality document will be presented at the next US IBIS summit meeting. IBIS MODEL REVIEW COMMITTEE Lynne Green reported that no new models have been received by the committee since the last meeting. Lynne suggested that a note regarding the Review Committee be added to the flyers to be distributed at IBIS summits. S2IBIS3 Ambrish Varma reported that he had received additional feedback on S2IBIS3, though only regarding fairly minor issues. He requested that a link to S2IBIS3 be added to the "Free Tools" links on the IBIS web site. At present, S2IBIS3 beta executables can be downloaded from: http://www.ece.ncsu.edu/erl/ibis/s2ibis3/s2ibis3.htm Feedback on the current beta version is appreciated and encouraged. ICM SPECIFICATION AND PARSER STATUS Michael Mirmak reported that no new issues had been noted by Kelly Green regarding the ICM parser. He also noted that no additional suggestions for a name for the ICM specification change process had been received by the IBIS Open Forum Board. As a result, he proposed that "IIRD" (ICM Issue Resolution Document) be the official name of the ICM specification change process and documentation. No objections were raised. An IIRD form, along with an ICM BUG form, will be posted to the appropriate portions of the IBIS web site in the coming days. NEW ADMINISTRATIVE ISSUES No new issues. BIRD87: SERIES PIN MAPPING CLARIFICATIONS Arpad Muranyi reported that no updates or comments had been received on BIRD87 since its introduction at the last Open Forum. Bob Haller summarized his understanding of the BIRD, which Arpad confirmed: that the current specification text under [Model Selector] clearly permitted links between that keyword and [Series Pin Mapping], but that [Series Pin Mapping] did not explictly name [Model Selector] as legal in combination with [Series Pin Mapping]. John Angulo inquired as to whether multiple or shared pins would be allowed under the clarified [Series Pin Mapping] text. Arpad confirmed that such usage would be allowed and that the current parser treats the keywords appropriately. Michael called for a vote. BIRD87 was approved unanimously by the six voting members present. It will be included in the next release of the IBIS specification (4.2). On a separate note, Arpad observed that the proper initialization of [Driver Schedule] states would be covered by an upcoming BIRD, yet to be issued. Bob Ross noted that he would be creating a new WIP directory on the IBIS web site for the IBIS 4.2 specification, as development progresses on it. IBIS 4.0 PARSER ISSUES Michael Mirmak summarized the state of current BUG reports. BUG82 was introduced and classified at a previous Open Forum meeting. BUG80 remains open with no agreement on a fix. Bob Ross suggested that doing nothing to fix the BUG may be an appropriate response. Bob also noted that changing the parser error message would be acceptable. John Angulo concurred, noting that the message simply should be made more "friendly" in indicating to the user where the syntax ambiguities lie. Bob noted that care should be taken not to incorrectly change current parser behaviors regarding other syntax errors when changing the error message. Michael Mirmak suggested that BUG80 should be reclassified when a keyword hierarchy is added to the IBIS specification. He also commented that BUG82 might be fixed internally by the IBIS Open Forum rather than by a software developer, as the code fix was already known. The revised code could then be quickly redistributed to licensees before their own products were negatively affected. Bob Ross objected, saying that this might unnecessarily distress licensees, EDA tool vendors in particular, to have such a change follow a parser release so quickly. The usual practice of the Open Forum has been to let BUG reports accumulate so that a developer can efficiently fix several at a time. Bob Haller expressed concern regarding current model authors and IBIS users, who might incorrectly create open-drain models based on the current parser's output. The discussion ended with agreement that an internal 4.0.2 parser could be developed and a release delayed an appropriate period of time to allow more full acceptance of the 4.0 parser. NEXT MEETING The next Open Forum teleconference has been scheduled for March 12, 2004 from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM US Pacific Standard Time. ============================================================================ NOTES IBIS CHAIR: Michael Mirmak (916) 356-4261, Fax: (916) 377-1046 michael.mirmak@intel.com Senior Analog Engineer, Intel Corporation M/S FM6-45 1900 Prairie City Rd.
