When calling into the meeting, provide the bridge number and passcode at the automated prompts. If asked by an operator, please request to join the IBIS Open Forum hosted by Michael Mirmak. For international dial-in numbers, please contact Michael Mirmak. NOTE: "AR" = Action Required. --------------------------------MINUTES----------------------------------- INTRODUCTIONS AND MEETING QUORUM Otto Bennig from Samtec joined the Open Forum. He has been working with IBIS models for seven years both at Samtec and at a previous employer. CALL FOR PATENTS Michael Mirmak called for any patents or pending patents related to the IBIS Version 4.0, 4.1, or ICM 1.0 specifications. No patents were declared. MEMBERSHIP UPDATE AND TREASURER'S REPORT Michael Mirmak stated that reminder mailings had been distributed to those 2003 Open Forum members who had not yet paid 2004 dues. He observed that at least one organization had expressed its intention not to renew this year. No new financial reports have been received from the GEIA, but earlier informal reports indicate that at least fourteen membership payments have been processed in 2004. Additionally, at least one new organization has expressed an interest in purchasing a parser license. REVIEW OF MINUTES AND ARS Michael Mirmak noted that minutes from both the April 2 Open Forum meeting and from the April 5 Summit were awaiting approval. Without objection, the minutes were approved without changes. Michael Mirmak also reminded the group that the Open Forum is now using the GEIA's approval process for meeting minutes. Minutes are distributed only after the GEIA counsel reviews and approves them. Bob Ross inquired about the status of specific organizations and reminded those in attendance about the importance of dues payment. MISCELLANY/ANNOUNCEMENTS No additional announcements were made. PRESS AND WEB PAGE UPDATES Syed Huq announced that the Events page on the IBIS web site has been updated with the latest summit information and is being processed by the GEIA web staff. He also noted that the Roster had been changed to reflect the 2004 membership status of those organizations who had either dropped out or paid. Bob Ross suggested that these updates be made as frequently as necessary, rather than allowing changes to accumulate. NEW MODELS AVAILABLE, LIBRARY UPDATE No new issues. OPENS FOR NEW ISSUES Syed Huq inquired about whether a document has yet been created to describe changes in IBIS 4.0 from IBIS 3.2. Bob Ross noted that the current unofficial tree documents, included in the IBIS web directories containing the specifications, note which keywords were introduced in IBIS versions after 2.1. MAILING LIST ADMINISTRATION John Angulo reported that the reflectors are operating normally and that no major outages have been noted. An upspike in delivery failures to Cadence occurred on Thursday, April 22 due to a connection problem at Cadence, but no other impact to the reflectors was noted. John also mentioned that some "spam" messages appear to have been added to the mail archive without having been distributed to the reflectors. While this is not a problem for users, it may represent a security concern. INTERNATIONAL/EXTERNAL PROGRESS No updates. Lynne Green will provide a report on the FSA Modeling meeting and JEDEC presentation at the next Open Forum meeting. DESIGNCON EAST 2004 SUMMIT REPORT Michael Mirmak summarized the results of the DesignCon East 2004 Summit. Fourteen people representing seven organizations attended, with several participating through the teleconference link. The conference itself had over 600 attendees, which represents year-over-year growth. Lance Wang commented that the event was oriented more toward simulation, service and PCB sales organizations this year. Ian Dodd observed that the papers, as noted in DesignCon West, were of very high quality. Michael Mirmak once again thanked Lance and Robert Haller of SiSoft for their help with logistics. DAC 2004 SUMMIT PLANNING John Angulo noted that a Thursday room for DAC 2004 had been reserved for the IBIS summit, but that availability for Tuesday was not known. The team agreed that the first call for papers should be distributed immediately after Tuesday availability was settled. John quoted a cost of between $1500 and $1700 for room, lunch, refreshments, microphone, flip chart and other equipment. An LCD projector will be arranged through an attending organization. The current reservation target is for 25 people, but Bob Ross suggested that the details of the pricing formula be obtained so that the maximum value could be calculated for the IBIS budget. As with previous DAC meetings, the IBIS Open Forum pays the cost for the event, though sponsorship contributions are appreciated. Michael Mirmak accepted the AR to determine if Guy de Burgh would be attending. No booth for IBIS is planned for DAC. OTHER EVENTS No other events were discussed. IBIS VERSION 4.0 AND 4.1 PARSER Michael Mirmak reported that the 4.0.2 parser code has been distributed to licensees and an executable version posted, for the appropriate operating systems, on the IBIS web site. A note has been added to recommend compilation for Windows using only the WIN95 and WINNT compilation switches. Michael stated that a company has expressed an interest in purchasing a parser license, but only if it can examine the code under NDA and can receive a copy of the license agreement. Since no formal NDA or license agreement now exists for the parser, Michael accepted the AR to develop both with the GEIA general counsel. Bob Ross summarized the assumptions behind parser distribution: that compiled code may be used and distributed freely within the licensed company, its product, subsidiaries, international organizations, etc. Further terms will be specified in the written agreement. Michael Mirmak also updated the team on the latest parser plans. A call for parser development bids was distributed in early March. Three serious inquiries have been received, with two bids. Bidding will close April 30. IBIS QUALITY COMMITTEE Bob Ross noted that meetings are now being held monthly, with the next meeting on May 4, 2004. IBIS MODEL REVIEW COMMITTEE No new models. S2IBIS3 Michael Mirmak noted that Ambrish Varma recently announced a new version of S2IBIS3 over the IBIS reflectors. At present, S2IBIS3 beta executables can be downloaded from: http://www.ece.ncsu.edu/erl/ibis/s2ibis3/s2ibis3.htm Feedback on the current beta version is appreciated and encouraged. ICM SPECIFICATION AND PARSER STATUS Michael Mirmak reported that a new IIRD (ICM Issue Resolution Document) has been issued. This is summarized in the Technical Discussion section below. FUTURES AND COOKBOOK SUBCOMMITTEES Michael Mirmak noted that meetings of the Futures and Cookbook subcommittees continue regularly. The Futures subcommittee is considering six specification changes and is creating and reviewing problem statements and proposals for solutions for each. The Cookbook Subcommittee has a draft outline for the new document and will be generating text for each section in the coming meetings. NEW ADMINISTRATIVE ISSUES Michael Mirmak reminded the team that the June DAC IBIS Summit would include elections of officers. Those interested in standing for an office may send self-nominations to Michael for consideration at the Summit. Nominations of third parties are acceptable, so long as the prospective nominee consents to the nomination. BIRD88: DRIVER SCHEDULE INITIALIZATION Michael Mirmak asked for feedback on BIRD88. No new comments were noted. Bob Ross summarized the intent of the BIRD. The current [Driver Schedule] text states that scheduled drivers must return to their initial states within the scheduling definition. To avoid ambiguity, the BIRD defines exactly which combinations of terms are allowed, to ensure that all start and end states of the driver are known. The new text also defines how [Driver Schedule] states are interpreted when used with [Diff Pin]. Bob Ross reiterated that approval was permitted at the next meeting, but not required. Feedback on the changes is strongly encouraged. BIRD89: KEYWORD HIERARCHY TREE Michael Mirmak introduced BIRD89. The BIRD establishes, in graphical form, the relationship between all keywords and subparameters, though it does not cover the option restrictions for subparameters such as Model_type. The tree is highly similar to the unofficial tree diagrams which have been posted to the IBIS archive since IBIS 3.0. Bob Ross noted that, if adopted, the BIRD adds the requirement of updating the tree with each new keyword or subparameter. Michael acknowledged this, stating that the tree would help resolve confusion over some parser-related issues, such as BUG80. Updating the tree should be a relatively low-cost way of minimizing confusion in future parsers. John Angulo pointed out that the [Add Submodel] keyword is incorrectly listed as having the same scope as [Model]. Michael acknowledged this and committed to issuing an updated version of the BIRD before the next meeting. IIRD1: CLARIFICATION OF MULT FOR S-PARAMETERS Michael Mirmak introduced IIRD1. At present, S-parameters can be used in ICM models, but only under certain restrictions: - [Nodal Path Description]s are used - ICM_model_type is "S-parameter" - [Derivation Method] is "Lumped" - LEN is not used with any N_section The specification strongly implies that "Mult" can be used, with any integer value, in describing interconnects using S-parameter data. This is not unambiguously possible, however, in cases such as three-terminal S-parameter networks. A Mult value greater than 1 would result in tools having no mapping between structures with odd numbers of ports within sections. The IIRD simply restricts Mult to 1 in cases where S-parameters are used. Michael reminded the attendees that the rules for IIRD approval are identical to those used for BIRD approval. Bob Ross suggested that the justification used for the restriction of Mult to 1 in the proposed text is incorrect. Other reasons apply; as noted by Arpad Muranyi, an even total number of terminals with mismatched input and output terminals would encounter the same problem. Michael accepted the AR to update the IIRD language to remove the justification used. BUG REPORTS John Angulo noted that no new BUG reports have been received since BUG84. Michael Mirmak observed that Ansoft reported a minor data type mismatch when compiling the latest parser code for version 4.0.2. Bob Ross suggested that both this and the compilation switch issue under Windows should be reported formally as BUGs. John Angulo accepted the AR to check the code for BUG84, to determine why the parser crashes rather than finishing cleanly. John also suggested analyzing the memory footprint of the current parser to ensure that the proper compilation methods are being used. Further, Bob Ross noted that additional BUG reports, unless part of new code, should not necessarily be fixed as part of parser development contracts. Where possible, the BUGs can be addressed by Open Forum members who are willing to write and test new code. NEXT MEETING The next Open Forum teleconference has been scheduled for May 14, 2004 from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM US Pacific Standard Time. ============================================================================ NOTES IBIS CHAIR: Michael Mirmak (916) 356-4261, Fax: (916) 377-1046 michael.mirmak@intel.com Senior Analog Engineer, Intel Corporation M/S FM6-45 1900 Prairie City Rd.
