CALL FOR PATENTS Michael Mirmak called for any patents or pending patents related to the IBIS Version 4.0, 4.1, or ICM 1.0 specifications. No patents were declared. MEMBERSHIP UPDATE AND TREASURER'S REPORT Michael Mirmak updated the team on the current state of Open Forum finances. Additional member organizations have announced that they will not be renewing their memberships for 2004. Only two companies approached for renewal have not yet responded either positively or negatively. However, inquiries have been received from at least two companies regarding ICM and Touchstone(R)* which may lead to membership requests. Additionally, APLAC Solutions Corp. of Finland has purchased a 4.0 parser license, and an inquiry has been received regarding a parser purchase from another company. REVIEW OF MINUTES AND ARS Michael Mirmak reviewed the minutes of the July 25, 2004 IBIS Open Forum teleconference. Michael noted that no requests for changes have been received and asked for objections to approving the minutes as written. The minutes were approved without objection. PRESS AND WEB PAGE UPDATES Syed Huq reported that numerous web site updates have been completed, particularly to the roster listing. Samtec and Green Streak Programs have been added to the roster, with the membership status of Sun and Ansoft updated. CSELT and Westlabs have been removed, with Accuson's status as part of Siemens also changed. NEW MODELS AVAILABLE, LIBRARY UPDATE Michael Mirmak noted, in Lance Wang's absence, that Lance had prepared a draft library update. The new web page is under review by the Open Forum board. MISCELLANY/ANNOUNCEMENTS No announcements were made. OPENS FOR NEW ISSUES Syed Huq requested that I-T tables be discussed during the technical portion of the agenda. Randy Wolff mentioned that ANSI balloting information was now available for review. MAILING LIST ADMINISTRATION Bob Ross reported that the reflectors are operating normally and that no major outages have been noted. INTERNATIONAL/EXTERNAL PROGRESS Lynne Green reminded the attendees that her paper on IBIS Quality had been accepted by the Cadence Users' Group and would be presented in September. Bob Ross reminded the attendees that the 13th Topical Meeting on Electrical Performance of Electronic Packaging (EPEP 2004) is scheduled for October 25-27, 2004 in Portland, Oregon. Several participants in EPEP have been involved with IBIS. Also, the Future Directions in IC and Package Design Workshop (FDIP'04) is scheduled the day before on Sunday, October 24, 2004. See the site below for details on both meetings: http://www.epep.org/ SUMMITS Michael Mirmak reviewed the upcoming IBIS Summit schedule. - PCB Conference East IBIS Summit, October 4, 2004, Westford MA PCB East is scheduled for October, with a Summit tentatively planned for Monday, October 4. Syed will prepare the calls for papers for PCB East in early August. - DesignCon IBIS Summit, January 31, 2005, Santa Clara, CA DesignCon 2005 will take place starting in late January, with a Summit scheduled for Monday, January 31. Bob Ross noted that the DesignCon 2005 summit was scheduled for January 31, conflicting with the TechForum portion of the conference. This is a large draw for the conference, but there are advantages to holding the summit early in the week, including ease of room reservations. Michael accepted the AR to find out about room flexibility at DesignCon. As the trade show is held on Tuesday and Wednesday, confirmation is needed from Guy deBurgh that the IBIS booth can be transported and set up for those days. John Angulo accepted the AR to check on this. - DATE European IBIS Summit, March 11,2005, Munich, Germany DATE 2005 will take place in Munich, with a Summit planned for Friday, March 11. Eckhard Lenski recommended contacting Ralf Bruening of Zuken regarding arrangements. Bob Ross agreed and observed that Zuken has traditionally reserved the room and been reimbursed by the GEIA. - Potential JEITA Asian IBIS Summit, Feb-March 2005, Tokyo, Japan Michael noted that Atsuji Ito of JEITA has kindly suggested hosting an Asian IBIS summit in Japan in early 2005. At present, early February through March seem best for holding such a summit. Michael is working with JEITA to investigate how large the attendance might be and what kinds of presentations might be given at such a summit. The attendees commented that this would represent a great opportunity for IBIS and for JEITA. Sponsorship opportunities for all these Summits are still available, with sponsors receiving free mentions in the minutes, agenda, and other announcements. IBIS QUALITY COMMITTEE Bob Ross reported that meetings continue to be held monthly. A special meeting was held July 6, but ended early due to lack of attendees. The next meeting is scheduled for July 20, and questions from Eckhard Lenski regarding the Quality document will be discussed. IBIS MODEL REVIEW COMMITTEE Lynne Green stated that two new models had been received by the committee and were under review. S2IBIS3 No updates to S2IBIS3 were reported. S2IBIS3 beta executables can be downloaded from: http://www.ece.ncsu.edu/erl/ibis/s2ibis3/s2ibis3.htm Feedback on the current version is appreciated and encouraged. IBIS VERSION 4.1 PARSER Michael Mirmak reminded the attendees that the board has made a tentative choice as to the parser developer for the IBIS 4.1 contract. However, no official announcements will be made until the terms of the contract are approved by the GEIA. Several new terms, regarding the alpha code release, are under negotiation now and require GEIA approval. The contract should be finalized within a week. Appropriate communication will be made to each bidder individually. Bob Ross inquired whether the Open Forum should vote on the contract or on each payment. Michael responded that the Open Forum should vote to approve the overall cost of the contract, rather than the individual payments. This vote will be held during the August 6, 2004 IBIS Open Forum teleconference. ICM SPECIFICATION AND PARSER STATUS Kelly Green reported that no bug reports have been received by him, though he is considering filing several IIRDs to clarify specification issues. Michael Mirmak noted that two companies have made inquiries regarding Touchstone (R)* applications or variations on S-parameter treatments in ICM. Discussions are underway with both organizations. Further, Michael observed that a new IIRD has been introduced and will be discussed later in the meeting. FUTURES AND COOKBOOK SUBCOMMITTEES Michael Mirmak noted that the Futures and Cookbook subcommittees continue to be active. No meeting was held July 15. The next regular meeting will take place July 29. The Cookbook Subcommittee is completing revision of the EBD/PKG/ICM outline. Further, the Subcommittee has received an offer of free assistance from a technical writer in creating both the IBIS and EBD/PKG/ICM Cookbooks. The Futures Committee is drawing up BIRDs to address digital input and output state limits on models defined under IBIS 4.1's multi-lingual extensions. These BIRDs, once discussed by the Subcommittee, will be forwarded to the Open Forum for approval. Recent committee material is stored at: http://www.ibis-information.org/futures/ NEW ADMINISTRATIVE ISSUES Randy Wolff raised the issue of ANSI balloting of the IBIS specification. His research indicates that the GEIA will support approval of 4.0, 4.1 or 3.2, or even 4.2 if it can be approved in short order. No specific date has been named, but the GEIA is encouraging the Open Forum to complete the ballot work soon. Randy has filed a PINS - Project Initiation Notification System -- request on IBIS, as ANSI-656-B. The attendees agreed that IBIS 4.1 was not stable enough to approve, and 4.2 has not yet been completed nor is a parser available for it. IBIS 4.0 seems the best candidate for ANSI balloting. Randy noted that the process requires public review of the specification by ANSI and that the details are being finalized with the GEIA. Michael Mirmak inquired whether the ANSI process would also include IEC approval of IBIS as well. Bob Ross observed that IEC approval is usually by nation. Randy took the AR to confirm this. BIRD88.3: DRIVER SCHEDULE INITIALIZATION Bob Ross summarized the changes in BIRD88.3 as primarily grammatical, with thanks to Arpad Muranyi for the suggested improvements. No technical changes have been made, though a minor typographical error noted by Randy Wolff will need correction in the published version. John Angulo endorsed the BIRD88.3 contact, noting that it clarifies implementation details of [Driver Schedule]. Michael called for a vote. The BIRD was approved unanimously by the members present. Bob accepted the AR to post the BIRD, with changes, to the IBIS web site. He also accepted the AR to update the work-in-progress draft of the IBIS 4.2 document. IIRD2: FREQUENCY-DEPENDENT RLGC MATRICES Michael Mirmak introduced IIRD2. The IIRD introduces a new ICM keyword, [Frequency], which will define the frequency at which row data in an RLGC matrix has been extracted. [Frequency] accepts a numerical argument and may appear multiple times under each matrix keyword, so long as the frequency of interest is not repeated. A limit of 100 frequencies is placed on each matrix. John Angulo expressed concern that the 100 frequency limit may be too low. Kelly Green stated that no limit was required if dynamic memory allocation is used in tools processing the ICM data. Michael agreed to change the text to explicitly exclude an upper limit on the number of frequency tables. John and Bob Ross noted surprise that all matrices for any ICM section had to have data for the same frequency points. Michael responded that this was not the original intent and that the IIRD will be updated to remove this requirement. The only intention was to force individual frequency tables to use the same matrix type and to express data for the same row and column data points across all frequency tables. Arpad Muranyi asked what difference existed between an RLGC matrix with no explicit frequency tables and a matrix with only one, as both express frequency-invariance. John responded that this is useful for documenting lab conditions under which data was extracted. Bob summarized Ege Engin's inquiries about w-element support under the IIRD. Michael responded that conversion from ICM to most proprietary formats was very easily scripted and that ICM, like IBIS, should refrain from including explicit support of proprietary formats. Lynne Green suggested that a link to the IIRDs be added to the eigroup.org "Specifications" area, as has been done with IBIS BIRDs. I-T TABLE DISCUSSION Syed Huq summarized the state of I-T table needs in the industry. The issue was first suggested by Cisco in March as part of a core power discussion. Conceptually, though the need is for core power descriptions and modeling, industry interest is focusing on using IBIS-like tables to describe buffer switching noise as a "test bed" for eventual core power descriptions. Syed proposed reissuing BIRD42.3 to cover this. Bob Ross expressed concern that I-T tables for buffers were being inappropriately offered as a solution expandable to core power issues. Bob suspects that these may be unrelated. Further, ICEM now allows core-level descriptions of power behaviors. Michael noted that the minutes from the previous summit gave ARs to Lynne Green and Arpad Muranyi to work with Syed on AMS-based solutions. Syed will work with Lynne and Arpad off-line and will bring a proposal to the next Futures Subcommittee meeting for further discussion. BUG REPORTS Michael Mirmak noted that no new BUG reports have been received, and that all open BUG reports have defined solutions. John Angulo confirmed this. NEXT MEETING The next Open Forum teleconference has been scheduled for August 6, 2004 from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM US Pacific Time. A vote on the terms of the IBIS 4.1 parser development contract is scheduled. ============================================================================ NOTES IBIS CHAIR: Michael Mirmak (916) 356-4261, Fax: (916) 377-1046 michael.mirmak@intel.com Senior Analog Engineer, Intel Corporation FM6-45 1900 Prairie City Rd.
