CALL FOR PATENTS Michael Mirmak called for any patents or pending patents related to the IBIS Version 3.2, 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, or ICM 1.1 specifications. No patents were declared. MEMBERSHIP UPDATE AND TREASURER'S REPORT Michael Mirmak reported that we are now at 30 members for the year with the addition of ZTE. This membership puts us ahead for our revenue target for the year. We are still working on closing two other memberships and on closing DAC payments. We may use any extra money for parser development. REVIEW OF MINUTES AND ARS Michael Mirmak reviewed the minutes of the July 25, 2006 IBIS Open Forum Summit. Michael and Bob discussed how to make the changes to the minutes. It was determined to note the changes in this meeting's minutes, but not change the old minutes, and also add a short note to the old minutes to reference a future set of minutes for the changes. One change noted was to mention a new book from Lynne Green and Roy Leventhal. Other changes include: 1) Guy de Burgh's name should be in [] 2) The summary of Ian Dodd's presentation should be changed to read: Ian Dodd noted that some S-parameter implementations do not necessarily use either convolution or a fixed timestep. Some debate ensued whether the use of a variable timestep approach is to increase accuracy or simulation speed. 3) On Gary Pratt's presentation a) the word "beta" should be removed b) "slew-rate, de-rated setup and hold timing" should be added to the mention of "overshoot, undershoot, etc." c) The phrase "key limitation" should simply read "a limitation" Michael Mirmak reviewed the August 4, 2006 IBIS Open Forum teleconference. No changes were needed on the August 4, 2006 minutes. The minutes were approved with the noted changes. PRESS AND WEB PAGE UPDATES Michael Mirmak reported for Syed Huq that updates to GEIA's Coming Events page were made. MAILING LIST ADMINISTRATION Bob Ross reported that the mailing list is working normally. NEW MODELS AVAILABLE, LIBRARY UPDATE Michael Mirmak reported for Lance Wang that a library update is in progress, and he was working on implementing a proposal to mark companies in the list that make use of the Quality Checklist. Lance Wang later reported that a library update was made to add Qimonda. MISCELLANY/ANNOUNCEMENTS Michael Mirmak noted that the minutes now include a GEIA balloting eligibility section that details meeting attendance to comply with GEIA voting rules. Active members who have attended two out of the last three meetings are listed with an "A" designation. OPENS FOR NEW ISSUES John Angulo wanted to discuss adding a Time to Vmeas parameter under the [Model Spec] keyword. INTERNATIONAL/EXTERNAL PROGRESS Bob Ross reported attending the IEEE EMC conference held Aug 14-18 in Portland, Oregon. He said that there were not many topics related to IBIS, but there were many people from the IBIS community in attendance. The Electrical Performance of Electronic Packaging (EPEP) conference is October 23-25, 2006 in Scottsdale, Arizona. There are sometimes presentations related to IBIS at this conference. More information on the conference can be found at the following url: http://www.epep.org/ EIA/ANSI APPROVAL ACTIVITIES Randy Wolff noted that a ballot summary and comment resolution notice was received from the GEIA on August 17. It detailed that the IBIS 4.2 specification passed the initial balloting stage with 9 members casting ballots, and all 9 were approval votes. Also, it was noted that the IBIS committee officially responded to editorial comments submitted by Bob Ross, and these changes will be made in the official version of the IBIS 4.2 specification document. A 15 day period starting August 17 is open to allow for any final comments from members related to the vote, and after the 15 days, the specification will be considered officially passed. Bob Ross commented that once the closure process is completed, we can do one upload of the official document to the website. SUMMITS - China Summit The China summit date is finalized as Friday, October 27 in Shanghai at the Radisson Hotel Shanghai New World. An official announcement has been sent out. Huawei is the primary sponsor, with Ansoft, Cadence Design Systems, Intel, Mentor Graphics, Signal Integrity Software (SiSoft), Sigrity and Synopsys as co-sponsors. - Japan Summit The Japan IBIS Summit will take place Tuesday, October 31 in Tokyo at the JEITA offices. The summit is planned from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM followed by a separate JEITA meeting from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. JEITA is the primary sponsor, with Cybernet Systems and Synopsys co-sponsoring the event. Michael Mirmak noted that additional notices will be sent out next week. Presentations for the China summit need to be ready a month before the event to give ample time for the presentation to be printed in the conference book. - Other Events No update. Sponsorship opportunities for the China and the Japan IBIS summits are available, with sponsors receiving free mentions in the minutes, agenda, and other announcements. Contact the IBIS Board for further details. IBIS QUALITY TASK GROUP Eckhard Lenski reported that at the last meeting, they approved changing the quality level ratings to a new system. They are working on implementing this and updating the Quality documents. The link to the quality task group checklist is at: http://www.eda-stds.org/ibis/quality_wip/ IBIS MODEL REVIEW TASK GROUP No update. FUTURES AND COOKBOOK TASK GROUPS Michael Mirmak reported that the Futures and Cookbook task groups have been officially dissolved. Futures issues are now being discussed in the new Advanced Technology Modeling task group, and cookbook issues will be handled in an ad hoc committee when necessary. Old Futures task group material is stored at: http://www.eda-stds.org/ibis/futures/ The Cookbook version 4 is stored at: http://www.eda-stds.org/ibis/cookbook/cookbook-v4.pdf MACROMODELING LIBRARY TASK GROUP Arpad Muranyi reported the the task group is changing its name to Advanced Technology Modeling task group to reflect the change in covering Future's task group topics and work beyond the Macromodeling library. At the most recent meeting, the group was summarizing API versus C modeling issues, and there was some gridlock on this. So, they will need to work more to resolve issues and find solutions balancing benefits for the model maker, the tool vendor, and the model user. For instance, allowing multiple languages makes it easier for the model maker but harder for the tool vendor to work with. Michael Mirmak asked about document storage and if there are any formal proposals in the works. Arpad mentioned that no formal proposals are in the works, but all documents are being stored in the macromodel group location. He also mentioned that most macromodeling work is complete. Arpad said that he had just received permission from Gary Pratt of Mentor to publicly post the library of models from Mentor's System Vision program. Task group material can be found at: http://www.eda-stds.org/ibis/macromodel_wip/ IBIS 4.2 PARSER STATUS No new issues have been reported with the IBIS 4.2 parser. All development work has been closed pending new BUG reports. NEW ISSUES None. BIRD97.2: GATE MODULATION EFFECT Arpad Muranyi reported that after the Summit presentation, he received emails from Antonio Girardi commenting on his presentation. Antonio thought they should find some solution, even if it is not perfect. Antonio plans to experiment more with Arpad's models to help finish up this work. It is possible that BIRD98 will be left as-is, without further updates and will ignore the dynamic switching effects. Michael Mirmak asked if we should change it so that some of the fundamental equations are in the spec, so that these can be changed to better accommodate dynamic effects for BIRD98. Arpad is thinking that a better solution is a white paper to describe all of this. Michael asked about how this relates to BIRD95. Arpad responded that BIRD95 gives better information on pre-driver and switching currents, but gives no information on how much of the total current comes from the pre-driver. This makes it difficult to relate the effects of BIRD95 and BIRD98 to each other. BIRD98: GATE MODULATION EFFECT (TABLE FORMAT) See BIRD97.2 for discussion related to BIRD98. IBISCHK4 BUG STATUS No update. No new BUGs have been filed. ICMCHK1 BUG STATUS Michael Mirmak noted that no new BUGs have been reported. However, recent discussions in the Futures Task Group imply that a specification change may be needed to correct the usage of the term "port" so that S-parameter interfacing in ICM is clarified. AD HOC COMMITTEES FOR TECHNICAL ISSUES Michael Mirmak mentioned that he plans to start forming ad hoc committees to address specific issues within IBIS, so that the groups will meet until a BIRD is completed, and then the group can be disbanded. He sees the need for possibly 5 groups immediately to address issues such as IBIS to ICM linking, Touchstone standardization, port interfacing between ICM and Touchstone, power delivery and gate modulation issues, and cookbook changes. NEW TECHNICAL ISSUES John Angulo solicited comments for how to deal with timing test loads for customers working with IBIS models with timing test loads more complicated than the standard R and C load. He was looking into adding a parameter for a Time to Vmeas measurement. One reason to not have this new parameter is that you want the difference with timing to Vmeas between the operating load and the test load for the timing spreadsheet. However, with this parameter in the IBIS model, it would facilitate automated flight time compensation. Michael Mirmak mentioned that the Golden Waveforms might be the best way to show this. Randy Wolff mentioned that he sees models from register vendors that use a more complicated test load in the datasheet that includes a length of transmission line. The Time to Vmeas parameter could help simulate these devices, because currently this value has to be simulated and manually added into timing calculations. John stated that the Time to Vmeas must be the same thing you would get when running the model into the test load, but you might see small differences between vendor simulations. A more complicated test load could help solve this problem. Michael thought that one might see significant differences between tool results due to automated V-t curve trimming. Also, we can look ahead to not needing compensation of timing when we have AMS type models that show complete clock to output timing paths. Randy suggested looking at ways to add a more complicated load description to the timing test load. Randy will look further into the reasons for why the register vendors in particular are using a more complicated test load than a simple RC circuit. NEXT MEETING The next IBIS Open Forum teleconference will be held September 15, 2006 from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM US Pacific Time. ============================================================================ NOTES IBIS CHAIR: Michael Mirmak (916) 356-4261, Fax: (916) 377-3788 michael.mirmak@intel.com Server Platform Technical Marketing Engineer, Intel Corporation FM5-79 1900 Prairie City Rd.
