The members of the IBIS Open Forum met in person for the first time at the 30th Design Automation Conference in Dallas, Texas. Quad Design graciously provided use of their hospitality suite in the Anatole Hotel for the meeting, along with lunch. The meeting was attended by eight of the nine software simulation tool vendors who have announced support of IBIS modeling, one North Carolina State University student, three new EDA vendors and two representatives of Standards Committees. Open Issues: Continuing with the precedent set in previous minutes, issues that are raised in Open Forum meetings will be tracked here, along with the owner and time when they'll most likely be addressed. In the future, I will delete resolved issues from the table one month after they have been closed. # | Description | Owner | On Agenda When? | Done 1 | New Keyword under pullup/pulldown | Powell | During V/I disc. on 5/7 | 5/7 2 | tri-state v/i curve | GD/JP | 5/21, Quad presents | 5/21 3 | Hierarchical model/file structures | Doyle | During V/I disc. on 5/7 | 5/7 4 | How is v/i and ramp data derived | Wong | During V/I disc. on 5/7 | 5/7 5 | IBIS 1.0 to stds committee? Introductions After a short period of informal discussions, each person in the room introduced themselves and briefly summarized why they were interested in IBIS. As noted before, there were several new participants in attendance. Several vendors noted that IBIS paralleled efforts they had already undertaken. Sandeep Khanna of Cadence commented that IBIS models serve a similar function for simulators that gasoline serves for cars. Gas can power the Volkswagen or the Lamberghini, models support all simulators of all degrees of sophistication. Jean Lebrun of Thomson-CSF/SCTF, who works with the Department of Technology in France and chairs two CAD standards committees, described his interest in IBIS. One of the committees is about two months into a project to develop standard ways of representing components, and hoped that perhaps IBIS might provide a basis for one portion of such a standard. II. Summary of IBIS Progress to Date Don Telian officially opened the meeting, providing a recap of events culminating in the Rev. 1.0 IBIS specification. He also noted a couple instances of press attention that IBIS has received, including mention in the May 27 issue of EDN and a recent issue of ASIC and CAD Report. We have received indications that EDN will be covering IBIS in more detail in the near future. III. 6/4 Minutes review, Open time for new issues: We asked for corrections or comments on the 6/4 IBIS minutes (none). Several people requested copies of past minutes. A/R, Don IV. Future Plans We discussed the need to expand the list of silicon vendors (SCVs) beyond Intel. We have indications of interest from several silicon vendors already; Signetics, Motorola and NEC were mentioned. Randy Harr (LMC) offered to help us get new SCVs on board. V. IBIS ASCII 1.0 ver1_0.ibs Electronic File Distribution Don distributed floppy disks containing the IBIS ASCII 1.0 Specification file and a 74F244 IBIS model file. He urged participants to distribute this specification widely, post it on bulletin boards, etc. As reported in the last minutes, Don mentioned two bulletin boards open for IBIS discussion. That information is repeated here: Compuserve: It is OK for all companies to use the general CADD/CAM/CAE Vendor Forum on Compuserve for IBIS activity. To access this forum, use the "go" word and, when prompted, enter "CADDVEN" to go automatically there. When uploading files/information, there is a form that must be filled out. All vendors should be sure to specify "IBIS" as a keyword. This allows global searches within Compuserve for anything related to IBIS. Note that anything uploaded is delayed for 1 day for a virus check. It will be possible to create a separate IBIS forum on Compuserve when the number of accesses and downloads reaches the correct level. EDN BBS. Charles Small at EDN has created an IBIS "SIG" on the EDN BBS. The BBS phone number is (617)558-4241, and typing "SS\IBIS" after login will take you to the IBIS area. All vendors are invited to use this BBS, as there is plenty of disk space. Uploads can occur by either: (1) sending a floppy to Charles Small (phone: (617)558-4556), or (2) following the upload procedure published under the "\SIG_INFO" area. VI. Golden Parser Discussion Don gave us an update on the Golden Parser: the contractor has been hired and has begun working on it. He expects to have it available to the subscribers (each of us who promised to pay $500 for rights to the source code and the use of the compiled parser) by the end of June. The group's intention is to turn the golden parser into the "electronic IBIS specification." The consensus is to make the parser object code freely available, but for the source code to remain intact and controlled by the IBIS membership. Don expressed concern that the source code would be modified, resulting in multiple versions of the object code. The hope is that changes made by the members to their copies of the source code will be used for their internal purposes only, so that the IBIS spec conformance checking will not be compromised. Two issues were discussed: 1. How do we get the golden parser to others who weren't among the original ten who are providing the funding? Jon Powell (Quad Design) suggested we may want to elect a treasurer who would collect the money, distribute the parser and manage funds that could be used for other things. Some of the future expenses discussed were future revisions of the parser, press releases, a small booth at the next DAC. This will be a 7/2 topic. 2. Is it OK to restrict the keyword "model" to a single, global, use in a file, or does the group want to be able to define new models names throughout the file? If the keyword is global, it must only be defined once; if not, must be defined once per component. The consensus was to keep the a model name global, only to be used once at the beginning of the model description. Part 2. IBIS Futures Don then turned the meeting over to Will Hobbs who gave a short overview of his efforts within Intel. Beginning in July, Will will chair the Open Forum, and conduct meetings on a monthly basis, rather than bi-weekly. The next meeting will be on July 2. VII. Agenda Item/Issues Submission Process Will would like participants to submit items for discussion at upcoming meetings either by e-mail, U.S. mail or by fax. He will include the items in upcoming meeting notices and will add them to the meeting agendas. Preferably, include a short description of the issue, and if possible, a short proposed solution. VIII. Standards Committees We discussed the pluses and minuses of rolling IBIS into a standards committee. In earlier sessions, we feared that IBIS would bog down and that standards committees took too long. Jean Lebrun of Thomson indicated it could be done in 12 to 18 months. Randy Harr of Logic Modeling indicated it could happen in less than a year. Randy offered to help submit IBIS to EIA, and mentioned that if it became an EIA standard than EIA must distribute the standard and will charge for it. Cadence suggested we hold off on going to standards body until IBIS ASCII covers 99% of components. Others felt we should hold off until we had made more progress on Rev. 2.0. IX. Communication Mechanisms Randy Harr of LMC gave us an overview of another BBS being put together by VHDL International, through internet that we may want to use for postings and discussions. He offered to help us get on board. We also discussed various ways to have a centralized IBIS mailing list alias that IBIS participants could sent mail to and have it passed on to all members. Noting the shortness of our face-to-face meeting, someone proposed (sorry, I forget who) having an all-day Industry Summit hosted by Intel to get rolling. Will agreed to host such a summit, with time and place to be discussed at a future Open Forum meeting. X. Adding Other Silicon Vendors We discussed when to bring in more silicon vendors, and decided that additional semiconductor- vendors should get info packet after the golden parser is done and tried, probably in late July. A/R Will: To keep list of interested Silicon Vendors. A/R All: Send Will information on Silicon Vendors who have expressed interest in joining IBIS. Include contact names and numbers. XI. Other We discussed how to publicize IBIS, and felt that creating a joint Press Release would be an excellent idea, particularly given the great interest already shown by the press. The meeting concluded at 1:45 PM. Reminder: Jon Powell is still compiling a list of how to reach Open Forum participants through email. Not everyone has reached Jon yet.
