Hi,

Thanks to all who helped me by responding to my previous queries.

I want to know about "Over-clocking" issue. I get few doubts when I
think about Over-clocking.

How it affects the simulation result and what is the solution to
overcome this problem?

If spice simulator can handle it efficiently then why IBIS simulators
can not do it?

Thanks in advance.

Surendra

Subject: RE: [IBIS-Users] IBIS Simulation algorithm

Andy,

A couple of comments (not arguments)...

You are right, that loading plays a big role on how good the
waveforms will be with [Ramp] vs. waveform tables. But the
issue is not necessarily how "heavy" the load is, but more
what kind it is. If, for example, there are lots of reflections
which come back to the driver while it is still in the transition,
you may need the waveforms to get more accurate results, because
the equivalent circuit of the reflections may look like one or
the other of those resistors I talked about in my previous post.
On the other hand, if the lines are really long, and the
transition starts from a quite state, the equivalent circuit
my look like the loading of the [Ramp] data.

Regarding crow bar currents, designers may actually deliberately
create overlapping pullup and pulldown transistors for slew
rate control. (I would call this a poor man's slew rate control,
because it comes relatively cheap, but has a lot of drawbacks)...

So much for now...

Arpad,

I don't disagree with what you wrote. I was just attempting to shed
light on the question, how does (and did) IBIS work without V-T
tables, which is where IBIS got its start.

For some devices, especially ones used in slower circuits or with
heavy output loading, one might get by OK with only the simpler model
in the simulator where the buffer changes from one state to the other
and you have no knowledge about exactly how or when one device turns
off and the other turns on. And maybe that was good enough ten or
twenty years ago. But with today's modern components and bus speeds
it may be important to know more than that about how the buffer
switches, with V-T tables as your guide.

My recollection is that, after the V-T tables were added to IBIS,
Hspice continued to not use them for quite a while. They were ignored
if present in the IBIS data sheet.

I would guess there are still quite a number of parts where there was
little attempt to avoid the momentary crowbar current when switching.
I think that anyone designing a CPU or other large pin count IC today
would be foolish to do that; but for small pin count jelly-bean parts
(yes, some people still use them), it was unnecessary. There were a
few parts with notoriously bad switching noise, but others weren't so
bad.

Regards,
Andy

Subject: Re: [IBIS-Users] Simulation with VT tables for different load conditions

Hi Sunrendra:

Even though IBIS has syntax to support reactive load elements
(L_fixture, C_fixture, and even L_dut and C_dut) we recommend
not extracting models using these elements. Some tools do not
even support these load elements, and others may support them
by vendor-specfic methods.

However, it is possible to process reactive loads by
accounting for the time-varying reactive path derivatives
within the four V-T methodology. One presentation provides
some details.

Subject: Re: [IBIS-Users] IBIS Simulation algorithm

There were a
few parts with notoriously bad switching noise, but others weren't so
bad.

Regards,
Andy

The RAMP key word only allows a purely resistive load which is the load that
should be used for extraction of VT curves and thus ramps. My experience
with models that have had non zero C_fixture is not good. The simulators
that I used with these models did not produce acceptable results showing
incredible amounts of waveform distortion. It is my recommendation (and
from members of the IBIS committee that I have discussed this with) not to
use C_fixture when extracting the VT curves. If you are making a model from
SPICE there is no need to have any capacitance in the load when doing the
simulations. If you are making the model from measurements you should be
able to design the test fixture to minimize any stray parasitic. BUT IN
ANY CASE DO NOT INCLUDE CREF IN THE MODEL UNDER C_FIXTURE!!!

Subject: [IBIS-Users] Non-existence of C_load in [Ramp] keyword

Hi,

The [Ramp] keyword used in IBIS initial version is still there in new
versions along with VT tables. This Ramp keyword also gives Rload value.

My question is as far as these VT tables are calculated only for Rixture
(or Rload), simulator has a choice to take value from [Ramp] keyword without
any problem but if these tables are generated for Rfixture and C_fixture
values (non-zero C_fixture value) then there is no any keyword C_load inside
the [Ramp] section.

How the simulator handles this case where [Ramp] is calculated for
Rfixture and C_fixture but there is no any C_load keyword in ramp section?
Does [Ramp] require any C_load keyword?

Surendra

Hi,

The IBIS specification permits up to 100 (VT) waveforms to be
included to describe buffer transitions, using a variety of loading
conditions. Can I get the answer how these tables are used during
simulation for a different load condition?

E.g. If VT tables are generated for C_fixture of 5pf and 10pf
and simulation has to be done with C_fixture of 8pf then how simulator
will take these 5pf and 10pf tables for its simulation at 8pf of load?

Thanks in advance.

Surendra.

Surendra,
=20
In addition to Tom's comments and my reply to it, I want=20
to add a little more to answer some of the other aspects
of your question.
=20
Some tools support only up to four V-t tables. This may
be done in a variety of ways, such as picking the first
four, or picking the first two rising and first two falling
waveforms from the IBIS [Model]. I do not know which tool
does what, you need to ask your vendor about their algorithms.
=20
Then there are some other tools which support all of the
V-t tables in the IBIS [Model], but again I don't know
what their algorithms are, so you need to ask them to
understand that.
=20
I can give you an example for how it could be done through
an experiment I did with a colleague in the following
presentation (mostly pg. 15 and onwards):

I hope this helps.

Subject: [IBIS-Users] Differential V-I bench measurement

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

- ------_=_NextPart_001_01CB5133.F7BD2150
Content-Type: text/plain;
	charset="us-ascii"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

I'm working on creating my first ibis model based on bench data and was
wondering if anyone might be able to help...

=20

How would you make the V-I measurement on a differential input with pure
differential on chip termination.

I've read the cookbook... and it doesn't really explain how to do this
on the bench.

=20

Thanks,

Bryan

BACKGROUND

We have held many successful Summit meetings across Asia in previous years.
This year we are adding a meeting in Taipei where many national and
international high technology companies have operations. Presentations
from past events are available at our Summit archive:

      http://www.eda.org/pub/ibis/summits/

Our objective is to reach out internationally to communicate with
the local experts and to learn of regional concerns.

deliver in Chinese as long as an English version of the material is
    available.

IBIS SUMMIT

This meeting will be conducted as a formal IBIS Summit Meeting.
Presentations will be archived in an electronic format on our
Summits site, and minutes of the meeting will be issued. However,
no formal decisions requiring votes will be planned.

CALL FOR PARTICIPANTS

We do this all the time.

From your description you want to have the final model have a floating 100
Ohm termination. The best way to achieve this is to model the termination
as a series resistor between the two inputs. You then model the inputs
without any resistance between them making sure when you measure them you
don't pass any current in the resistor. You use the Diff Pin table to
connect the two inputs as a differential pair. You use the Series Pin
Mapping to place the termination between the two inputs. And use a R Series
as the termination.

Arpad came up with another method to do this using multiple IV tables but
I'm not sure how much support there is in simulators for this. See the IBIS
archives for details.

I'm working on creating my first ibis model based on bench data and was
wondering if anyone might be able to help.

How would you make the V-I measurement on a differential input with pure
differential on chip termination.

I've read the cookbook. and it doesn't really explain how to do this on the
bench.

Thanks,

Bryan

Tom's comments are also valid for L_fixture.
If you ever wonder how you can design a test
load that looks like a pure resistor, just
make a nice long T-line so that the reflection
doesn't come back to the driver before it is
done with the transition...

The RAMP key word only allows a purely resistive load which is the load
that should be used for extraction of VT curves and thus ramps. My
experience with models that have had non zero C_fixture is not good.
The simulators that I used with these models did not produce acceptable
results showing incredible amounts of waveform distortion. It is my
recommendation (and from members of the IBIS committee that I have
discussed this with) not to use C_fixture when extracting the VT curves.
If you are making a model from SPICE there is no need to have any
capacitance in the load when doing the simulations. If you are making
the model from measurements you should be able to design the test
fixture to minimize any stray parasitic. BUT IN ANY CASE DO NOT INCLUDE
CREF IN THE MODEL UNDER C_FIXTURE!!!

=20

Hi,

The [Ramp] keyword used in IBIS initial version is still there in
new versions along with VT tables. This Ramp keyword also gives Rload
value.=20

My question is as far as these VT tables are calculated only for
Rixture (or Rload), simulator has a choice to take value from [Ramp]
keyword without any problem but if these tables are generated for
Rfixture and C_fixture values (non-zero C_fixture value) then there is
no any keyword C_load inside the [Ramp] section.=20

How the simulator handles this case where [Ramp] is calculated
for Rfixture and C_fixture but there is no any C_load keyword in ramp
section? Does [Ramp] require any C_load keyword?=20=20

Subject: [IBIS-Users] Non-existence of C_load in [Ramp] keyword

Hi,

The [Ramp] keyword used in IBIS initial version is still there in
new versions along with VT tables. This Ramp keyword also gives Rload
value.=20

Subject: RE: [IBIS-Users] Simulation with VT tables for different load conditions

Bob,

Thanks for the note on this. This seems to be a pretty
clever way of doing the extraction, and fairly simple
too (as long as the *_fixture circuit remains simple
and can be solved like that).

But we need to be careful with our selection of words.
This presentation talks about extraction, and calculates
the I_die(t) in the presence of the known LRC *_fixture
elements during extraction. And this is the correct
answer to the original question which dealt with
*_fixture.

My presentation, on the other hand, deals with the
reactive loading problem of an I-V / V-t curve based
IBIS model during simulation. This problem cannot be
solved with the Synopsys presentation you quoted if the
basic IBIS algorithm only uses the 2EQ/2UK algorithm,
because it involves only Ohm's law and doesn't have
enough information for the EDA tool to solve the
differential equations associated with the reactive
loads.

So strictly speaking I have to admit that I didn't
answer the original question by quoting my own
presentation, but the two topics are related.

Subject: Re: [IBIS-Users] Simulation with VT tables for different load
conditions

Hi Sunrendra:

Even though IBIS has syntax to support reactive load elements
(L_fixture, C_fixture, and even L_dut and C_dut) we recommend
not extracting models using these elements. Some tools do not
even support these load elements, and others may support them
by vendor-specfic methods.

However, it is possible to process reactive loads by
accounting for the time-varying reactive path derivatives
within the four V-T methodology. One presentation provides
some details.
