Haruny:

This would be a good study for the IBIS Users group. However,
I want to keep company-specific issues off the IBIS reflectors.
If there is any public discussion, then use the SI reflectors.

Subject: Pin to model mapping

Hello IBISers,
Since we are currently in the process of constructing an IBIS extractor,
it would be really useful if someone could answer the following question:

In some of the IBIS part models on the web site, there is an incomplete
mapping of pins to driver and receiver models.

1. Is this intentional?
2. Is there a default mapping which takes place if a pin within a part
does not have an eplicit mapping?

One of the parts only had two pin mappings, even though the part has
more than 14 pins, and multiple drivers/receivers (a buffer chip).

Thank you in advance
John

My guess: Either (a) the person who made the IBIS models didn't bother
finding out the true pin/model mapping, leaving it as an "exercise for
the user," or (b) the pinout wasn't fixed when the model was created.

It's a pain in the neck because it can make the model unusable.

Andy

I'll respond to both Gustavo Blando and J-M. Claveau since they are
essentially asking the same question.

My colleague and I presented a paper on making behavioral models at
DesignCon98 last month. There were several other papers on the topic as
well. I think it's safe to say that collecting accurate IBIS models is
a dilemma many of us are facing today.

There are various sources of these models, and you've probably heard
from some of them already. There are companies that make models for a
living, and there are IC vendors that supply models as a service to
their customers. Most of latter are publicly available. When you get a
model, here are some things to consider:

1. Does the model pass the IBIS syntax checker? If it doesn't, then it
wasn't checked out.
2. Get a hold of the paper, "Practical Issues with IBIS Models," by Bob
Ross. You can find it at the IBIS web site,
www.eia.org/eig/ibis/ibis.htm, under "Articles."
3. How well does the model agree with the real component(s)?
4. If the model was created from a sample part, what were the
processing conditions? Typical? Gustavo, you already touched on some
of these issues. Most of us need to know the typical and the spread
around typical so we can determine operating margins. Consider
temperature and voltage as well.
5. Make sure the model creator measured capacitance as well as IV
curves and rise/fall times.
6. What kind of driver is it, and what advanced modeling features might
it require?
7. Under what loading conditions is the model valid? Validating the
model with a standard load does not cover a transmission line load!

Greg

----- original messages attached below -----

We are designing several boards and we are having a very difficult time
getting models directly from the vendors.

I would like to have some information of places that can
generate (create) models for me.

The kind of models that I am looking for are
SPICE, IBIS, QUAD

I would like to know from these vendor, how do they generate models,
against what? (measured), how do the measure the models, on the pin or
on
the die, can they provide different corners models (Strong Process, Weak

Process), what about temperature and Voltage...... etc.

Also If possible I would like to know some personal experiences from
people that have already bought models before (are them good??)

Any information will be really appreciated.

Thanks

held at EMC on Thursday, February 12, 1998***

Thank you to Fabrizio Zanella, Fawn Engelmann and EMC for
hosting this month's meeting and providing refreshments.
I want to thank the members of the user forum in
general for being so helpful in coordinating meeting space.

This was a relatively quiet meeting. The purpose was to mainly
catch up on the happenings from the IBIS Summit and DesignCon98.
Overall, the group found the IBIS summit interesting and useful.

The European IBIS summit meeting is being held on Thursday,
February 26, 1998 in Paris, France. Paul Galloway of Cadence
Design, IBIS User Forum and Software Aspects of IBIS...
committee chairman, is attending the Paris meeting.

Subcommittee on Accuracy:
------------------------

Notes from Greg Edlund's presentation

Regarding the IBIS Summit

*There is strong interest in the topic of model accuracy
although there will be some disagreement about implementation.

*We were encouraged by veterans of the IBIS committee to pursue the
accuracy specification. IBIS was intended to be open-minded and
 user-driven.

*Two IC vendors whish to be involved in the sub-committee on
 accuracy: TI and Fairchild!

*Hyperlynx announced an exciting new product: IBIS Developer's Tool
 Kit for $ 3,000.

*Users bring a valuable, and previously under-represented, contribution
 to the committee.

*We have to face the simulation engine question someday soon -
 anonymously?

*Do we need a full-scale accuracy test bed, i.e. models and simulation
 engines vs. test hardware?

*How can we broaden the scope of the User's Group? There is a need for
user education. Can we contribute to this need on a larger scale?

A concept board is in the works for running IBIS models, etc. There
is hope that the details of the board and its follow-on will be placed
on the web site (see below re: web site).

The next accuracy subcommittee meeting is being held, Thursday,
February 26, 1998 at 3:00 at Digital, Maynard, MA. Contact Greg Edlund
(greg.edlund@digital.com) if you would like more information.

Other Business:
---------------

*Next User Forum Meeting:

		    Date: Thursday, March 19, 1998
		    Time: 3:00 PM
Location: Digital Equipment Corp., Hudson, MA
Customer Conf. Center, D309, HLO2/third floor.

DIRECTIONS WILL BE SENT OUT SHORTLY WITH THE MEETING REMINDER!

*User Web Site: We would like to develop an IBIS Users web site.
Presentations, minutes, technical details regarding test boards and other
pertinent technical information will be placed on the web site.
This is just getting off the ground so stay tuned.
Kathy Breda of NESA and Paul Galloway are going to be driving the
development.

Kathy spoke with Bob Ross while at DesignCon98 and received support for
the activity. The User site will hyperlink to the formal IBIS site.

*Distribution List: Kathy will be making available an e-mail distribution
list
of IBIS user group attendees to the group. This is on the to-do list and
should be done by the next IBIS user group meeting in March.

*There has been a request that "crash" courses on IBIS be made available.
More discussion needed here. Ed Sayre offered to assist with a curriculum.

Subject: Hyperlynx IBIS Developer Tool Kit - Action Item from IBIS User
  Meeting
Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Greetings:

One of the action items from the February 12, 1998 IBIS
User Meeting was to find out more about the
Hyperlynx developer tool kit.

Kellee Crisafulli at Hyperlynx was kind enough to supply
all the information needed to procure this
tool kit and find out what it is all about.
Please find the detail below.

Regards,

  Kathy Breda

----------------------------------------------

	Hyperlynx Developers Tool Kit Information

 - The e-mail contact person at HyperLynx is davek@hyperlynx.com

 - We have a form to fill out to get a free copy of the
HyperLynx IBIS development system. It can be faxed
to anyone that requests it. Call: us at 425-869-2320
   and ask for Bonnie.

Basic requirements for a free copy are:
     - Must work for a company that sells commercially available
       IC's.
     - Must agree to develop at least one IBIS model.
     - Must agree to make IBIS models available to the public free of charge.
     - Must agree not to use the IBIS development system
to do customer support. (We expect applications people
       to purchase a copy.)

The other details are in the form. (It is only 1 page, single-
sided, so no need to be intimidated!)

 - What is in the development system:
    - HyperLynx Visual IBIS Editor
This includes a built-in copy of the IBIS Open Forum
EIA syntax checker and data validator which HyperLynx
      has licensed.
    - HyperLynx Easy IBIS Wizard
A powerful program that makes it very easy
to create an IBIS model by filling out a series of
forms in a "wizard" format. The result is a syntactically
correct IBIS model. Much of the data is synthesized from
data sheet information instead of requiring the user to
      enter extensive V/I tables.
    - IBIS simulator to verify the device model in actual use.
    - Example IBIS models from numerous manufacturers.
    - Several simulation test files with various loads.
Users can also create their own validation schematics
to apply other types of loads, such as transmission lines.
    - The free version has a restricted version of the HyperLynx
simulator (limited in the size of simulation schematic it
will run). These restrictions should present no problem for
anyone that simply wants to verify an IBIS model's simulation.

- What platforms does it run on?
Windows 95 and Windows NT (Intel platform only)
NT versions 3.5x and 4.0 are both supported.

- For those people that would like this tool and do not qualify
for a free copy, the for-sale version is $3000.00 and removes
restrictions on the size of the simulation that can be run.
(Just order our standard LineSim package, as it will include
all the components in the IBIS development system.)
