Introduction:

RAIL is a standard for routing and timing specifications of board layout characteristics.

Group Objectives:

In order to enable a standard method to electronically transport routing and timing guidelines to layout customers, simulation tool vendors, and end customers, this template is proposed. The intention of this template is to specify a consistent format that can be parsed by software, allowing layout customers to derive layouts compatible with their own products.

Activities and Achievements:

RAIL Version 1.0 was first introduced January 26, 1996. Work continued leading to RAIL Version 1.2 which was formally ratified on December 18, 1997.

While RAIL Version 1.2 is presently the official standard, work will continue on refining RAIL to cover and include related areas and future technological advances.

The committee meets every month on RAIL technical development, RAIL utilities development, RAIL parser/checker development, and for exchanging general information on good routing and timing practices and for dealing with other developments and standards related to RAIL.  Some RAIL Files are presently available from Intel on past projects and are in progress on current projects.

The committee has been inactive for several years.
