IBIS (I/O Buffer Information Specification)

Introduction:

IBIS is a standard for electronic behavioral specifications of integrated circuit input/output analog characteristics.

Group Objectives:

In order to enable an industry standard method to electronically transport IBIS modeling data between silicon vendors, simulation software vendors, and end customers, this template is proposed. The intention of this template is to specify a consistent format that can be parsed by software, allowing simulation vendors to derive models compatible with their own products.

Activities and Achievements:

IBIS Version 1.0 was first introduced in June, 1993. Work continued leading to IBIS Version 2.1 which has been formally ratified as ANSI/EIA-656 on December 13, 1995.
IBIS Version 3.2, containing some technical extensions, has been released on August 20, 1999 and has been formally ratified as ANSI/EIA-656-A on September 21, 1999. This document became the official IBIS document forwarded to IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) in the IEC 62014-1 ratification process (first started in September 1997). It was approved in December 1999 and has been voted for publication as an official international specification on April 13, 2001. IBIS 3.2 was renewed as ANSI/EIA-656-A on August 17, 2005.
IBIS Version 4.0 was ratified by the IBIS Open Forum on July 19, 2002.
IBIS Version 4.1 was ratified by the IBIS Open Forum on January 30, 2003. This version of the specification contains links to the IEEE VHDL-AMS and Accelera Verilog-AMS languages. It also enables links to Berkeley SPICE netlists.
IBIS Version 4.2 was ratified by the IBIS Open Forum on June 2, 2006. It was formally ratified as ANSI/EIA-656-B on September 1, 2006.
IBIS Version 5.0 was ratified by the IBIS Open Forum on August 29, 2008, adding algorithmic model interface (AMI), power deliver system, and EMC checking advances.
IBIS Version 5.1 was ratified by the IBIS Open Forum on August 24, 2012, with significant clarifications and extensions to the widely adopted AMI format.
IBIS Version 6.0 was ratified by the IBIS Open Forum on September 20, 2013, with more clarifications and extensions to the AMI format, including support for serdes redrivers and retimers.
IBIS Version 6.1 was ratified by the IBIS Open Forum on September 11, 2015, with clarifications and extensions to the AMI format, including AMI_Resolve and PAM4 modeling.
IBIS Version 7.0 was ratified by the IBIS Open Forum on March 15, 2019, with IBIS-ISS and Touchstone interconnect models, plus IBIS-AMI backchannel modeling.
IBIS Version 7.1 was ratified by the IBIS Open Forum on December 10, 2021, with IBIS-ISS and Touchstone support for Electrical Module Descriptions (EMD) and C_comp models, IBIS-AMI backchannel statistical optimization, On-die PDN models, and with other clarifications and extensions to the AMI format.
IBIS Version 7.2 was ratified by the IBIS Open Forum on January 27, 2023, with with fixes to the redriver and retimer IBIS-AMI flows, added support for PAMn in IBIS-AMI, and with other clarifications to the AMI format.
IBIS Committee Task Groups exist to address Quality issues, Cookbook creation, independent Model Review and Advanced Technology Modeling techniques.
The IBIS Open Forum has also completed an Interconnect Model Specification (ICM) 1.0. ICM 1.0 was ratified on September 12, 2003. A revised version, ICM 1.1, was ratified July 15, 2005 and approved as ANSI/GEIA-STD-0001 on January 18, 2006. A free parser for ICM is available.
Touchstone Version 2.0 was ratified by the IBIS Open Forum on April 24, 2009. Technical advances continue, and a free Touchstone parser is available.
The IBIS Open Forum has also completed an Interconnect SPICE Subcircuit specification (IBIS-ISS) 1.0. IBIS-ISS 1.0 was ratified on October 7, 2011.
The committee is formally affiliated with SAE International. Prior to 18 July 2013 IBIS was affiliated with TechAmerica. The IBIS Open Forum meets every three weeks on IBIS technical development, IBIS utilities development, IBIS parser/checker development, and for exchanging general information on good modeling practices and for dealing with all issues related to IBIS. The IBIS Open Forum also holds several IBIS Summit meetings worldwide throughout the year for face-to-face discussions and technical presentations.
