That's a myth! I have personally created an IBIS model for 5 Gbps speed
and used it with no problem!
It is certainly not the "high speed" that may limit IBIS. It is the way
some high-speed I/O buffers are implemented (designed) and the failure
of some IBIS simulators to handle new IBIS features.
For example, some driver pre/de-emphasis techniques used with high-speed
I/O buffers may be cumbersome to implement in IBIS format even with
driver scheduling. But they are still doable - only not as easy as with
SPICE.
And then you hear that only S-parameters should be used for very
high-speed I/O buffers. S-parameters are a linear phenomenon - how could
they be used to represent non-linear performance of high-speed I/O
buffers? Could somebody shed some light here? Could it be another myth?

I've got some questions regarding the performance of IBIS models in high
speed systems (>1Gbps data rate?).
I once read in an article saying that IBIS models are no longer reliable
at high speed operation. But isn't that an IBIS model that is generated
from SPICE simulation should reflect the behavior of the SPICE model?
What actually limits an IBIS model's performance in a high speed system?
